Janitorial Safety Manual


1. Safety Policy Statement

At Hunter Creek Contracting, safety is our highest priority. We are committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all employees and clients. Every team member is responsible for following safety procedures and reporting hazards immediately.

No job is so urgent that it cannot be done safely.


2. Employee Responsibilities

All employees must:

  • Follow all safety rules and procedures.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Report all injuries, accidents, or near-misses right away.
  • Participate in required safety training.
  • Use equipment and chemicals only as trained.

Supervisors will:

  • Provide safety training and guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies.
  • Maintain documentation of safety meetings.
  • Correct unsafe behaviors immediately.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The following PPE may be required depending on the task:

  • Disposable or reusable gloves
  • Safety glasses (when needed)
  • Face masks or respirators (if required)
  • Non-slip, closed-toe footwear
  • Protective aprons (for certain cleaning tasks)

Employees must always:

  • Wear gloves when handling chemicals or cleaning restrooms.
  • Replace damaged PPE immediately.
  • Dispose of single-use PPE properly.

4. Chemical Safety

Improper chemical use can cause burns, respiratory issues, or serious injury.

All employees must:

  • Read and follow product labels before use.
  • Never mix chemicals (especially bleach and ammonia).
  • Follow proper dilution ratios.
  • Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all products.
  • Store chemicals in labeled containers only.
  • Keep lids tightly closed when not in use.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation when using strong cleaning products.

If chemical exposure occurs:

  • Rinse affected area immediately with water.
  • Seek medical attention if needed.
  • Report the incident to management immediately.

5. Restroom Cleaning & Biohazard Safety

Restroom cleaning requires strict sanitation procedures.

Employees must:

  • Always wear gloves.
  • Use separate rags and mops designated for restrooms.
  • Disinfect high-touch surfaces thoroughly.
  • Dispose of sanitary waste properly.
  • Place “Wet Floor” signs immediately when mopping.

For biohazards (blood or bodily fluids):

  • Wear gloves and additional PPE if necessary.
  • Use approved disinfectant products.
  • Dispose of contaminated materials safely.
  • Report the incident immediately.

6. Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention

Slips and falls are one of the most common workplace injuries.

To prevent accidents:

  • Place “Wet Floor” signs immediately when mopping.
  • Keep walkways clear of cords and debris.
  • Secure vacuum and extension cords properly.
  • Wear non-slip footwear at all times.
  • Report uneven flooring or hazards immediately.

7. Equipment Safety

Improper use of equipment can cause injury.

Employees must:

  • Inspect equipment before use.
  • Check cords for damage.
  • Do not use equipment with exposed wiring.
  • Unplug machines before cleaning or servicing.
  • Use equipment only as trained.

Heavy equipment such as floor machines must be operated carefully and stored properly after use.


8. Lifting & Ergonomics

To prevent back injuries:

  • Bend at the knees, not at the waist.
  • Keep loads close to your body.
  • Avoid twisting while lifting.
  • Ask for help with heavy items.
  • Use carts when available.

9. Winter & Parking Lot Safety

During cold weather:

  • Wear proper winter clothing and insulated boots.
  • Use ice cleats when walking on icy surfaces.
  • Walk slowly on snow and ice.
  • Be aware of surroundings in dark parking areas.
  • Park in well-lit areas when possible.

10. Emergency Procedures

In case of emergency:

  • Call 911 if immediate medical attention is needed.
  • Notify management as soon as possible.
  • Complete an incident report.

Know the location of:

  • Fire exits
  • First aid kits
  • Fire extinguishers

11. Incident Reporting

All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported immediately.

Reports should include:

  • Date and time of incident
  • Location
  • Description of what happened
  • Names of witnesses (if any)

Prompt reporting helps prevent future accidents.


12. Safety Training

Hunter Creek Contracting conducts biweekly safety training. Attendance is required. Documentation will be maintained for insurance and compliance purposes.

Employees must acknowledge and confirm safety training participation as required.
